 The Ballers Story....

The Ballers are an established basketball club synonymous with young players learning how to become better athletes and competing at the highest level.  What started as a single team has grown to over 100 players competing in grades 4 through 8 including our girls Lady Ballers teams.  At the core of The Black Mountain Ballers are friends and families from the communities we live in.  The close relationships we have with our players and their families are the driving force behind our success.

What is Black Mountain Basketball?

Black Mountain Basketball is a youth competitive basketball program supporting the surrounding communities of Black Mountain. Parents now have an additional local option when considering competitive basketball opportunities for their children. Our goal is to develop basketball skills for young players in our community while playing in a competitive environment.

Our teams compete proudly under the Ballers name!

What is the difference between “recreational” and “competitive” basketball leagues?

Recreational basketball leagues are commonly focused on exposing new players to the game and providing a positive atmosphere to improve player’s skills. There are usually additional rules that govern many facets of the game including playing time, scoring limits, offensive/defensive strategies, etc. This allows new players the opportunity to play while learning and limiting greater skilled players from dominating.

Competitive basketball focuses on the player’s overall basketball and athletic skills and eliminates any of the limitations of recreational league rules. The games are played at a fast pace, aggressively and with the majority of players having solid basketball skills. Additionally, the level of coaching, refereeing, athlete, skill and team basketball are all elevated. There is no better preparation for players hopeful of competing in High School.

Players should only participate in one or the other during their respective seasons.

Who are the coaches?

We have an experienced staff of coaches managing their respective teams. Each of our coaches has many years of coaching experience for youth sports teams at various levels of competitive play. Collectively they have coached little league baseball, girls softball, Pop Warner football, High School football, recreational and competitive basketball.

What about playing time?

Unlike recreational basketball, there are no rules governing mandatory playing time for competitive basketball teams. Playing time is determined by the coach’s discretion from game to game. Many factors are considered for playing time including the player’s individual skill/development, team dynamics and maintaining a competitive balance. Ultimately, the players determine how much court time they see based on their level of skill, playing within the team game and competitive desire. A concerted effort to learn, improve and work hard will always get recognized by the coaching staff.

When and where will practices be held?

Our teams will be practicing at various Poway Unified School District facilities (Oak Valley Middle School, Deer Canyon Elementary, Rancho Bernardo Heights Middle School, etc). Teams will practice twice a week beginning in mid-March for the Spring League.  A complete practice schedule for all of our teams can be found on our Calendar page.

What is the fee to participate in the Spring?

The fee per new player will be $350. This pricing point is very competitive with other similar basketball programs in the San Diego area with many costing $600+ a season. The fee covers the expenses of managing the team including registration fees, equipment, insurance costs, practice facility usage, player uniforms, etc.

My son or daughter competes on a baseball team/soccer team and conflicts with the basketball schedule. Can we participate in both?

We support player participation on multiple team sports. We recognize that there may be scheduling conflicts throughout the season but we can work with families to ensure maximum participation in multiple sports. A few of our 7th grade basketball players compete in Pop Warner Football simultaneous with the basketball season and we are able to manage the schedules effectively.

Disclaimer

There are no politics here related to playing sports in high school. This is the place to come if you want your son or daughter to become a better athlete, learn the fundamentals of the game and be better prepared for competitive play irrespective of sport. Unfortunately, the "pay to play" aspect of club teams affiliated with some high schools is a sad reality. These concerns are non-existent in the Black Mountain Sports family.
