Disclaimer
Black Mountain Baseball is a youth competitive baseball program supporting the surrounding communities of Black Mountain. Parents now have an additional local option when considering competitive baseball opportunities for their children. The baseball program was created with one goal in mind: To teach and develop our athletes’ necessary baseball skills and knowledge in order to prepare them to compete at the next level (National and International play, High School ball, College ball).
Our teams compete proudly under the Ballers name!
Our baseball program continues to grow. We currently have a 31 player roster, with two 13U teams and a 12U team. All of our teams compete year round in leagues and tournaments throughout San Diego. We soon hope to start traveling outside of San Diego for tournaments, as well as maintaining our attendance in local competitions.
Recreational baseball leagues are commonly focused on exposing new players to the game and providing a positive atmosphere to improve player’s skills. There are usually additional rules that govern many facets of the game including playing time, scoring limits, offensive/defensive strategies, etc. This allows new players the opportunity to play while learning and limiting greater skilled players from dominating. Competitive baseball focuses on the player’s overall baseball and athletic skills and eliminates any of the limitations of recreational league rules. The games are played at a fast pace, aggressively and with the majority of players having solid baseball skills. Additionally, the level of coaching, umpiring, athlete, skill and team baseball are all elevated. There is no better preparation for players hopeful of competing beyond their recreational years.
We have an experienced staff of coaches managing our teams. Each of our coaches has many years of both playing and coaching experience for amateur sports teams at various levels. Collectively, they have coached Little League Baseball, High School Baseball, College Baseball, and gained other valuable experiences through working as Private Instructors.
Unlike recreational baseball, there are no rules governing mandatory playing time for competitive baseball teams. Playing time is determined by the coach’s discretion from game to game. Many factors are considered for playing time including the player’s individual skill/development, team dynamics and maintaining a competitive balance. Ultimately, the players determine how much playing time they see based on their level of skill, playing within the team game and competitive desire. A concerted effort to learn, improve and work hard will always get recognized by the coaching staff. As our main goal states, we want to develop all of our players’ skills. This development occurs mostly in practice. However, great experience can be gained from playing in games and the baseball staff will strive to give ample and equal playing time to all players. But, the overriding factors for playing time have been stated above.
Since our inception, we have not had a practice player. We believe in bringing on a player to Play, not just to Practice. However, we are aware of each family’s unique circumstances. Therefore, if you are interested in your son being a “practice player” only, we can discuss that.
We have ongoing try-outs. As long as our roster size will allow it, we utilize a Three-Practice Try-Out System. This allows our coaching staff to fully evaluate your son as a player, your family and ours to learn each other, and to make sure your son will fit in with our team already in place.
Black Mountain Baseball currently practices: Mondays and Fridays; from 6:00pm-8:00pm; on Canyonside Field 6.
The monthly fee is $105. Tournament and/or league fees are additional costs that are divided amongst the players participating. This pricing point is very competitive with other similar baseball programs in the San Diego area. The fee covers the expenses of managing the team including registration fees, equipment, insurance costs, practice facility usage, etc.
We support player participation on multiple team sports. We recognize that there may be scheduling conflicts throughout the season but we can work with families to ensure maximum participation in multiple sports. Many of our baseball players compete in Pop Warner Football, American Youth Soccer Organization and other activities simultaneous with the year-round baseball season and we are able to manage the schedules effectively.
There are no politics here related to playing sports in high school. This is the place to come if you want your son to become a better athlete, learn the fundamentals of the game and be better prepared for competitive play irrespective of sport. Unfortunately, the "pay to play" aspect of club teams affiliated with some high schools is a sad reality. These concerns are non-existent in the Black Mountain Sports family.
